JAX 2009: Drools (- freie Rule Engine vom Feinsten)

drools1(Disclaimer: this text was written while listening to the presentation – please be forgiving with errors that might result from both listening and writing)

Our last JAX 2009 talk – we are waiting for Arno Haase to begin his talk about Drools, a business rules engine. Business rules engines have been one of the areas we have been neglecting for too long and I suspect great potential for our internal model driven framework – therefor I hope for a closing highlight of this JAX. Let’s get started…

JAX 2009: Open Source As Part of a Successful Product Strategy

freedom(Disclaimer: this text was written while listening to the presentation – please be forgiving with errors that might result from both listening and writing)

Paul Clenahan is going to talk about taking an open source approach helped his company to build a successful business.  While waiting for his talk I wish him the best of luck because currently my colleague Jochen and I are the only attendees to the talk. My guess is that the wording “product strategy” sounds too much like a marketing event for a technical conference like the JAX. Paul is the vice president of product management at Actuate and hopefully has a better plan than to present just some marketing slides lest we need to give him feedback by leaving, too.

JAX 2009: JSR-301 (summary & (unfair?) rant)

Flame On!(Disclaimer: this text was written while listening to the presentation – please be forgiving with errors that might result from both listening and writing)

Andy Bosch was our second target on day two of the 2009 JAX. He is going to talk about the JSR-301 specifying bridges between JSF and portlets. Since portlet integration with JSF is one of the next topics in an internal project at QuinScape I was naturally very curious about how much currently is possible (having experienced myself that portlets usually are the ugly step child of web projects). We learned…

JAX 2009: Tuning Hibernate & JPA (Tuning von Hibernate und JPA-Anwendungen)

(Disclaimer: this text was written while listening to the presentation – please be forgiving with errors that might result from both listening and writing)

Michael Plöd starts our second JAX day with a talk about how to tune your persistence layer. Since we make extensive use of both Hibernate and JPA in our company portal framework and always like to speed things up even more I was quite curious about what he has to offer. Especially since I’m usually known as the guy who is not that interested in databases and rather prefer to talk about the actual domain model.

JAX 2009: Practical Domain-Specific Languages with Groovy

(Disclaimer: this text was written while listening to the presentation – please be forgiving with errors that might result from both listening and writing)

Guillaume Laforge is my next stop in the JAX presentation route. He talks about “Practical Domain-Specific Languages with Groovy”. I’m a huge fan and supporter of DSLs believing them to be the next big thing in truly enhancing developer productivity. Since I also believe that we are just scratching on the surface of what we can achieve with DSLs I was curious about what Guillaume would have to show, especially since Groovy seems to be a pretty natural fit for many types of DSLs.

JAX 2009: Java goes RIA

(Disclaimer: this text was written while listening to the presentation – please be forgiving with errors that might result from both listening and writing)

I started my Java career as developer and architect for a project called “Informationssystem Lebensmittelüberwachung” (ILM for short, translated to English as “Information system for food surveillance”). I participated in that project from 1998 to 2000 and the main technology being used were Java Applets in order to implement an extremely feature rich and highly reactive user interface. Since then I somewhat have lost touch with Applets and browser based Java applications so I was very curious to finally get a glimpse of what JavaFX might offer to me during my JAX 2009 visit. So, what did I learn?
